The CLARION Project Demonstrator 6 (PD6) explores how nature can help make ports more resilient to climate change. Led by ACCIONA and carried out at the Port of Rotterdam, the pilot applies Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) to strengthen underwater structures and boost marine biodiversity. In this demonstrator, researchers and engineers use oysters to create living reefs that protect port infrastructure from seabed erosion while improving water quality and providing habitats for marine life. The oysters are first grown on limestone rocks and recycled concrete blocks, then placed in sheltered port areas such as the Alexiahaven and Prinses Arianehaven. After one year of growing, they will be relocated to a new location where real scour protection is needed, to evaluate the performance of this NbS in a real environment
The project also combines engineering, ecology, and circular economy practices. By reusing construction and demolition materials and integrating marine ecosystems into port operations, PD6 demonstrates how industry and nature can coexist.
