Pilot Demonstrator 1 aims to enhance the sustainability and functionality of seaport quay walls by extending their service life. The project will explore strengthening methods such as soil improvement and underwater anchors while utilizing risk-based and data-driven assessments. A unique data set from the Port of Rotterdam, including smart quay walls, will be used to reduce uncertainties in soil-structure interaction and temperature effects.
Fully calibrated finite element models developed by TU Delft will simulate quay wall performance, with field tests conducted by increasing dredge depth and platform loading. Real-time monitoring using high-frequency data logging will validate the predictions. Additionally, advanced numerical models will integrate geotechnical investigations with geophysical data to better account for soil spatial variability.
By combining digital twin technology with embedded sensor networks, the project will refine model accuracy and compare predicted vs. actual performance. The Pilot Demonstration 1 in CLARION Project also aims to develop sustainable quay wall designs using innovative materials, modular construction, and lean engineering to reduce carbon footprints and enhance climate resilience.
