The CLARION project has released a new video presenting the pilot “Nature-Based Solutions to Increase the Resilience of Maritime Ports”, implemented at the Port of Rotterdam.
The video showcases how CLARION is exploring innovative approaches to integrate nature-based solutions into port infrastructure, with the goal of improving resilience to climate challenges while enhancing marine biodiversity.
Led by ACCIONA and carried out in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam, the pilot investigates the use of artificial oyster reefs as part of scour protection systems around maritime structures. These living structures can help prevent seabed erosion while simultaneously creating habitats for marine species and improving water quality.
The video features insights from Iris Heemskerk, Project Engineer at the Port of Rotterdam, and Carlos Martín-Portugués Montoliu, Pilot Leader at ACCIONA, who explain the objectives of the pilot and the importance of combining engineering solutions with ecological approaches.
The demonstrator includes activities such as the remote setting of oyster larvae on limestone rocks and recycled concrete blocks, their deployment in sheltered port areas such as Alexiahaven and Prinses Arianehaven, and the monitoring of oyster growth to assess the potential of these solutions for wider application in ports.
Through this pilot, CLARION aims to demonstrate how nature-based solutions can contribute to building more resilient, sustainable and biodiversity-friendly port environments.
