CLARION (Climate Resilient Port Infrastructure) and SAFARI (Safe, ClimAte Resilient Infrastructure) sat down for their first joint interview, bringing project coordinators Ken Gavin (TU Delft) and Prof. Rochdi Merzouki (Université de Lille) to the same (virtual) table. The conversation underscored how the two sister projects will reinforce each other as they steer Europe’s ports through an era of intensifying climate risks.
Asked for one actionable step, both coordinators converged on climate-risk mainstreaming: ports should embed resilience metrics into every investment decision today, from quay upgrades to IT procurement, so that adaptive capacity grows organically rather than in crisis mode.
With four-year timelines and 45+ partners between them, CLARION and SAFARI are only at the starting line. Yet this first joint exchange signals an integrated path forward: resilient hardware married to intelligent software, tested in flagship ports and ready to scale across the continent.
