Climate Resilient Port Infrastructure

By embracing these initiatives, CLARION aims to contribute to Europe’s collective efforts to combat climate change and build a sustainable future. The total EU budget for the project amounts to approximately 6.9 million euros, spanning a 48-month duration and concluding in April 2028.

The CLARION Project consists of six Work Packages that will work together to ensure the project’s efficacy. Specifically, they will evaluate the current state of the art in terms of port procedures for dealing with climate disruptions, highlighting the needs and challenges that must be addressed to enhance infrastructural resilience by identifying barriers, challenges, and stakeholders.

The Work Packages will define the design of the CLARION port infrastructure, deploying 10 pilot demonstrations in operational environments to evaluate their operational availability in crisis scenarios. Pilots will be deployed in the four participating ports and their connected inland waterways and transport network. Six of them will focus on port infrastructure resilience to climate change and four on hinterland transport resilience, with all of them having varying degrees of impact on improving safety and security in port access and operations as well as port environmental sustainability.

Indeed, hinterland infrastructures and the inland waterways channels and connections will complement the analyses conducted at the port level to ensure a holistic approach to the issues addressed and enhance the resiliency of the entire ecosystem. To properly evaluate the results, a series of KPIs will be chosen and monitored based on extensive data collection, including in-situ historical and real-time datasets from the sensor networks deployed at participating ports.

All these activities will be designed to be transferable to other ports experiencing similar climate challenges, thanks to extensive communication with the external audience of industry and general stakeholders, to enforce knowledge sharing and improve resilience.
